A Session with a Hypnotherapist

People who are interested in hypnosis to help them improve in areas such as self-esteem or public speaking skills, or deal with problems such as bad habits, insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression or addictions often wonder what exactly is involved and what they should expect in a session with a hypnotherapist. A session with a hypnotherapist can vary depending on the hypnotherapist you choose. In addition, hypnosis sessions will also vary as hypnotherapists generally tailor their sessions specifically toward each individual’s needs.

However, most sessions with a hypnotherapist have several basic elements in common. First of all, before you begin your first session with a hypnotherapist, you will probably have a consultation, which may involve a questionnaire. The purpose for the consultation is so the hypnotherapist can get to know you, get a case history, and assess your situation and needs. A session with a hypnotherapist sometimes also involves hypnosis tests to test your suggestibility. Once these “preliminaries” are established, your first session with a hypnotherapist can begin.

First, the hypnotherapist will probably ask you to get into a comfortable position and completely relax and control your breathing. Next, a typical session involves focusing your eyes on a specific point, and maintaining that focus as well as deep relaxation and breathing while listening to the voice of the hypnotherapist. The intent of this process is for you to achieve a state of alternate consciousness or awareness.

Finally, after the actual hypnosis, the hypnotherapist will likely give several suggestions to help reinforce what has been taught and learned during the therapy session, as well as instructions and preparations for the next session. Using these techniques can help you move faster through the hypnosis therapy process. A session with a hypnotherapist can seem daunting, but if you know a little of what to expect, it can be a very relaxing and beneficial experience.
