Is there any agency, organization or department that\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> operating under this sense of urgency?&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise-knowledge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Team_EK_Gamification_1.jpg\"><br><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals are subject to the same imperative. In general, employees today have way too much work to do and not enough time to do it. There\u2019s always another task to complete, another message to send, another meeting to attend, and another project to start.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise-knowledge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Team_EK_Gamification_1.jpg\"><br><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tension puts Learning and Development (L&amp;D) leaders in a tough position\u2014training programs can represent a good investment, but those programs are in an intense battle for employees\u2019 time and attention, not to mention organizational resources. Yes, training and development helps employees become more efficient and effective at doing the work, and quality L&amp;D programs can retain and draw talent to an organization. But training doesn\u2019t help employees get through the urgency of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to-do list, and the prospect of career advancement through training can feel too nebulous to attract the attention of someone who\u2019s caught up in the daily grind.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise-knowledge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Team_EK_Gamification_1.jpg\"><br><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make matters more challenging, much of the training that\u2019s traditionally available in larger organizations is passive and flat. It fails to capture the dynamic, multilayered nature of the problems today\u2019s workers tackle on a daily basis. To learners, such training feels boring and irrelevant, again putting it low on the priority list. The result is that employees don&#8217;t engage in training and the organization doesn\u2019t realize the potential of its training investment. Training budgets get slashed, and quality declines.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise-knowledge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Team_EK_Gamification_1.jpg\"><br><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamification and game-based learning offer a way to overcome these challenges and escape this downward cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cNot just a fad.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terms <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game-based learning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GBL) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gamification<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sound similar, but they\u2019re different tools used for different types of challenges.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game-based learning<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a method in which learners play a game as part of the process of reaching specific learning objectives. From a learner\u2019s perspective, GBL is about acquiring skills and knowledge through play. From a designer\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s creating a learning activity in which the game\u2019s rules mirror some principle or pattern that learners need to understand as part of their everyday job, or as part of a curriculum of knowledge.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Games of various forms have been a part of organized learning for <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/336460471_Game-based_learning_-_a_long_history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thousands of years<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Modern applications of game-based learning often include digital games or instructor-led classroom experiences. Games have been used to:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluate <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegameagency.com\/case-studies-category\/ihs-towers-management-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leadership potential<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Train field managers <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/preloaded.com\/work\/in-90-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to respond to humanitarian crises<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teach children about <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegameagency.com\/case-studies-category\/stem-education-platform-grades-5-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM concepts<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outbreakready.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">readiness for infectious disease outbreaks<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegameagency.com\/case-studies-category\/the-leadership-forum-leadership-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career options<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help teens <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gametogrow.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">develop social skills<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigate <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegameagency.com\/case-studies-category\/red-flag-anti-trust-and-fair-competition-simulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difficult judgment calls<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for compliance training<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegameagency.com\/case-studies-category\/american-college-of-chest-physicians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physicians treating patients with COPD<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamification<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the practice of applying game elements to non-game problems and goals. It\u2019s taking certain techniques that can effectively shape attention and motivation (points, badges, leaderboards, and prizes are four popular examples) and applying them in a way that helps people focus on some area of personal growth and achievement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamification can take a wide variety of forms, but it often involves providing users with ways to track their progress towards a goal. Tracking progress motivates users to repeat a desired activity or change a behavior by tapping into our innate drive for achievement. Here\u2019s a small list of examples:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitness trackers like Fitbit and WHOOP are platforms that incorporate gamification techniques like <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fitbit.com\/should-you-really-take-10000-steps-a-day\/#:~:text=Wear%20a%20Fitbit%20tracker%20and,at%205000%20steps%20each%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daily goals<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/thelocker\/join-create-teams-on-whoop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team leaderboards<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Websites that depend on the engagement of their users include gamified mechanics that encourage participation. Stack Overflow, for example, offers <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/users\/29407\/darin-dimitrov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reputation points and badges<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to participants who answer the questions that other users post to the site.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Game Agency\u2019s <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thetrainingarcade.com\/arcades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Arcades<\/i> platform<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gamifies online training with features like quests, experience points, achievements, daily mini-games, and player-to-player challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khan Academy employs <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.khanacademy.org\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115002552631-What-are-Course-and-Unit-Mastery-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">progress bars and mastery points<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Duolingo offers <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.duolingo.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/204980880-What-is-a-streak-#:~:text=A%20streak%20is%20the%20number,will%20increase%20by%201%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daily experience points (XP) goals with ever-increasing streaks<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each day a learner meets their daily goal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gamified productivity app <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/habitica.com\/static\/features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Habitica<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lets players set up their own tasks to be completed in order to earn XP for their avatar and rewards like armor, mounts, and pets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As illustrated by the above examples, the outcomes one aims to achieve with gamification are different from the ones addressed by game-based learning. GBL is an approach for creating dynamic, immersive, powerful learning experiences. Gamification is an approach for generating and sustaining motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cStrategies and tactics.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&amp;D professionals strive to provide meaningful experiences for learners that result in positive effects on the organization as a whole. L&amp;D departments also seek strategies for sustaining and enhancing those positive effects. The aim is to keep learners continually engaged so that they (and the organization) can continually improve. We consider GBL and gamification to be complementary to other more traditional L&amp;D programs. For organizations looking to uplift their L&amp;D offerings, we recommend a blended approach. Such an approach incorporates the strategic, community-building benefits of gamification along with the tactical, practice-oriented benefits of game-based solutions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In gamification, users progress towards a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to engage with a motivational <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">system<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In gamification for L&amp;D, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be relevant to both the user and the organization\u2014to complete a course or pass a certification exam, for example. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">system<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may involve community engagement, collaboration, competition, and other highly engaging elements that motivate people to continue participating (see the list of examples in the previous section).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, gamification within L&amp;D contexts is a strategy for encouraging employees to engage more frequently and positively with learning. Gamification pulls learners into a journey and keeps them coming back over potentially long periods of time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamification is strategic, while game-based learning is tactical. In the instances when employees benefit from focused training, game-based learning becomes a powerful tool. Game-based experiences immerse learners in rich environments with meaningful challenges. Games engage learners emotionally, forging the mental connections that make learning \u201cstick\u201d for lasting impact on performance.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cPlay, Learn, Win.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blending gamification and game-based learning creates a virtuous cycle. Learners play games, and by playing, they learn. By learning, they win; they progress towards their gamification goals and develop their skills on the job. Play \u2192 Learn \u2192 Win \u2192 Repeat. The learner and organization both win.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Today\u2019s organizations need employees to learn more and perform more. The solution is to create an environment where employees <\/b><b><i>want<\/i><\/b><b> to learn.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations can achieve progress in this area by expanding game-based learning on a targeted level. As employees experience training that feels relevant and reflects the dynamic nature of their daily work, they\u2019ll prioritize and complete training when offered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, even better results are generated when GBL is deployed within a gamification system.
